Historical Background

Akwaabadwom (Welcome Song) for SATB chorus is a song of adulation, and is considered to be one of Amu’s patriotic songs. The solo version was composed in 1929, and the only date for the choral version is found on the sketch fragment: January 28, 1937. The theme of the lyrics is an outpouring of congratulations for our elders for what they have done to earn us our heritage. Akwabaadwom congratulates our forebears for all they did and suffered to retain for us this land, which we of the present generation call our land of birth. A.R. Turkson notes that, though the dedication was omitted, Akwaabadwom was “… dedicated to the Aborigines Rights Protection Society of Ghana.” (https://www.utpjournals.press/doi/pdf/10.3138/uram.10.1.39)
Performers: Chorus unidentified. GBC Recording 2.
