Historical Background

Abibirimma for SATB chorus was composed May 13, 1931, and is one of Amu’s patriotic songs. “This song was inspired by Rev. Christian B. Gati, Amu’s teacher and headmaster of the Peki-Blengo Presbyterian Middle Boarding School. According to Amu, Rev. Gati had the opinion that Africans were backward in their development and as such they needed to do something for themselves so they could catch up with other countries. He said the song could be remembered as the ‘Gati song.’” (Philip T. Laryea. Ephraim Amu: Nationalist, Poet and Theologian, p. 79.) (PL)

Performers: The Harmonious Chorale • Musical Director: James Varrick Armaah
